If you are looking to add the finishing touches to your house or a particular room with shutters or blinds but can’t decide between the two, then we’re here to help. Choosing the right window dressing can make a big difference to the finished look and feel of your home.
Whilst blinds offer a wide range of styles, fabrics and finishes, shutters provide a timeless, bespoke finish that becomes a permanent feature of your windows. In this guide, we’ll explore the benefits of each option and take a closer look at our most popular options that are worth comparing.
What is the difference between shutters & blinds?
The main difference between blinds and shutters is how they are installed to your windows and doors:
Blinds – Bespoke blinds are a great choice for a variety of windows, adding style and privacy to your space. Depending on the style, many of our blinds are fitted to the top of your window recess on a cassette, which then the blind is operated from top to bottom. Other styles, like perfect fit blinds, can be simply clipped in, without the need for drilling and operated in a variety of ways.
Shutters – Interior shutters are slightly different and are seen more as a permanent window feature. They are all drilled and sealed in during installation, meaning it’s not as simple to easily remove or replace them. The advantage of this is that they are designed to be long-term window dressings, made with high-quality materials and finishes that have a 10-20-year lifespan! Like blinds, they have a variety of control systems – from classic center tilt rods to modern easy tilt, which is completely hidden.

What about Venetian blinds vs Shutters?
To make more of a direct comparison between blinds and shutters, Venetians are a great choice:
Both Shutters and Venetian blinds have adjustable slats that can be tilted to control light and privacy, can both be designed with or without tilt rods and can be finished in variety of paints or stains.
Here is a breakdown of the key differences and similarities between Venetians and Shutters:
| Feature | Venetian Blinds | Shutters |
| Versatility | Various fitting options, colour and material finishes | Various fitting options, colour and material finishes |
| Blackout | Not an option | Yes, option to have a built-in blackout blind |
| Cost | Depending on style chosen, venetians are a more affordable dressing choice | Shutters are generally a more expensive long-term investment. |
| Appearance | Slim horizontal slats controlled with a cord or tilt wand. Decorative tapes can be added for a more premium look. | Framed panels with thicker louvres, designed with or without a tilt rod, fixed into your window or door recess. |
| Insulation | Limited insulation due to slatted design and surrounding gaps. | Great for insulation, the fixed, sealed finish reduces heat leaving your home. |
| Flexibility | Can be raised up completely to give you a clear view through your windows. Motorised options available for hard to reach windows. | Manual operation only. Panels can be opened for access and views, but frame remains fixed and panels often sit to one side of your window. |
Venetian Blinds - perfect for living rooms
Shutters have a more architectural appearance and are fitted within a fixed 4-sided frame (in most cases), eliminating more chances of light seeping through at night, and heat escaping during the winter. The tailored finish suits homeowners looking for a permanent feature that also is stylish and has many practical benefits.
Venetian blinds can be very versatile, depending on the independent needs of the customer. We offer standard free-hanging options, perfect-fit and motorised finishes to suit a range of spaces. The difference with venetian blinds is that they are not designed to block out light completely but can still control it effectively in rooms like conservatories and living rooms.
Which is best for your home?
Choosing between blinds and shutters ultimately comes down to your personal style, budget and the look and feel you want to create in your home. Blinds offer a huge variety of styles, fabrics, colours and patterns, making them a versatile choice for different interiors.
Fabric blinds, in particular, can introduce softness, texture and warmth to a room, making them ideal for homeowners who love interior design, maximalist interiors or simply want to create a cosy feel to their home.
Shutters, on the other hand, offer a timeless and adaptable finish that works beautifully across a wide range of interiors. Their clean lines and structured design complement both classic properties and contemporary, minimalist spaces, while different shutter styles, louvre sizes and finishes allow you to tailor the look to your home. Both blinds and shutters offer plenty of ways to bring your interior vision to life and the team at TSS are here to help find the perfect style for you.
