Hosting your first Christmas in a new home is a special milestone. It’s the moment your new space really starts to feel like yours – filled with friends, family, warmth, and festive memories. But if you’re doing it for the first time, it can also feel a little overwhelming and stressful. How do you make your home feel welcoming? What decorations should you choose? What food and drink does everyone like?

This guide brings together practical hosting tips, Christmas decorating trends for 2025, and some simple ways to make your windows shine – all while keeping an eye on comfort, style, and energy efficiency.

Window fairy lights

Create a warm & welcoming ambience

Lighting sets the tone for Christmas, especially on those dark winter afternoons.

  • Fairy lights on windowsills or draped across shutters instantly add sparkle.
  • Use LED candles or real candles (carefully!) to create pockets of glowing warmth around the living room or dining area.

2025 decorating trends are all about candle clusters and soft glows – think tapered candles, simple lanterns, and groups of three or five for visual balance.

Food and Drink favourites

No Christmas is complete without delicious food and festive drinks! For starters, consider a mix of classic dishes and party food– think pigs in blankets, stuffed mushrooms, and a selection of cheeses and crackers. Every homeowner waits for the release of the M&S Christmas food but other popular stores this 2025 are actually; Aldi, Sainsburys and Waitrose for their huge collections. Consider popular festive tipples like Bucks fizz, Mulled wine, Baileys or non-alcoholic options such as Shloer, Nosecco, or even just a nice cup of hot chocolate or tea!

Make your windows the star of the season

Your windows play a huge role in both the look and the comfort of your home at Christmas.

A quick Pre-Christmas clean

Give your window coverings some attention before decorating:

  • Dust shutters or blinds to freshen the space.
  • Wipe the windowsills before placing decorations.
  • Clean the glass to get the best shine from fairy lights or window décor.

A few minutes of prep will make every decoration look twice as good

Improve your homes energy efficiency

Christmas hosting often means the heating is on longer, doors are opening and closing more often, and warm air escapes faster than we’d like. But your window coverings can actually help more than you think.

Shutters: a natural insulator – If your home already has shutters, they can make a noticeable difference in winter:

When closed, shutters create an additional insulating layer by trapping air between the panels and the glass. Keep them open during the day to make the most of natural light and then close them for the evening to keep warmth inside.

Thermal Blinds for evening warmth – Thermal or honeycomb blinds are also excellent during colder months.

Even if you don’t have them yet, it’s worth knowing for the future that 1. their honeycomb structure helps locks heat in between the cells, 2. Closing them at dusk can prevent warmth from escaping through the glass and 3. They work beautifully alongside thick curtains for extra insulation!

Christmas Decorating Trends for 2025

Want to impress guests and keep your home looking stylish? Here are the top trends this year you could try for your first Christmas:

Oversized bows – Bows have been popular for the last few years at Christmas and this year, they are just even bigger! Extra-large bows in velvet, linen, or satin are everywhere this year – on trees, mantels, chairs, and wrapped around stair bannisters.

Nostalgic Christmas – Christmas in the 90s was beloved by many, with bright, colourful lights, bold tinsel, and those classic festive touches that made every home feel magical. Fast forward to 2025, and many of those 90s kids are now homeowners or buying their first homes. Bringing back these iconic Christmas trends this year is a wonderful way to rekindle childhood memories and fill your new home with that warm, nostalgic festive spirit.

Scandi Minimalism: As well as all of the bolder interiors, calm, neutral palettes with natural greenery are still in for those who love a “clean look” home over the holidays. Introduce white paper stars, ceramic houses, and warm candlelight to keep a cosy but modern Christmas look.

Dark & Moody “Gothmas”: According to Etsys Christmas 2025 trends, due to the huge impact of the Netflix series, Wednesday, deep greens, navy, black, and burgundy combined with antique brass, lace ribbons, and velvet textures are in this year!
