The Story

When Shaz approached us, her project was already gaining national attention through “George Clarke’s Beautiful Builds”. But beyond the cameras, this was a deeply personal renovation.

After being widowed at a young age, Shaz had been raising her two children on her own. This project was about creating a brighter, more functional kitchen and garden space for her family.

Her home, a mid-terraced Victorian property, was being transformed with a new kitchen extension and aluminium bifold doors opening onto the garden. The goal was to improve the flow between indoor and outdoor living – something that’s becoming more important in modern family homes.

However, like many homeowners installing bifold doors where they wish to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air, Shaz faced a common issue: how to enjoy fresh air without letting flies and insects into the house

The solution: A discreet Fly Screen for Bifold Doors

We worked closely with Shaz to supply a made-to-measure fly screen, designed to blend seamlessly with the modern doors.

A key part of the process was our surveyor and installer, Charley, who worked directly with Shaz from the initial survey through to installation. With the project evolving during the build and being filmed for TV, attention to detail and flexibility were essential, ensuring the final solution fitted perfectly within the updated design.

The main priorities were clear that Shaz wanted to maintain uninterrupted views of her garden, allow maximum light into the kitchen space and create a practical solution for her family life.

The result?  A nearly invisible screen that “melts into the frame,” offering protection without compromising on aesthetics.

The impact on everyday living

Since installation, the fly screen has completely changed how the family uses their space.

As Shaz shared: “With the return of warmer days the screen has been an absolute game changer for our family. I can leave the bifold doors wide open all day and evening and not worry about bugs coming into the house.”

This addition has helped enhance how the family connects with their home and garden: “We’ve had evenings sitting around the fire pit… with the doors open, making it easy to move between the kitchen and garden with ease – and no flies in the house.”

Small details that make a big difference…

“My son is terrified of flies and the screen has helped build his confidence… he will now happily sit in the kitchen with the door wide open.” It has even helped with other day-to-day benefits: “I’ve even used it to help cool down bakes – it’s so practical to leave the door open without worrying.”

“I’m very grateful to the team at The Shutter Studio for making such a difference to how we use the space and improving the flow in our home. I wish my late husband, David was here to see what we have created. I know he would have loved it and would have been showing off the fly screen to all his friends! ” – Shaz

Although almost invisible when not in use, the fly screen has become one of Shaz’s favourite features: “Considering most people wouldn’t even know it was there, it plays a big role in connecting the room to the garden… practical as well as pretty.”

Fly screens are becoming a much more popular solution in the UK, which Shaz has also noticed: “When I show it to people, most of them want one – especially as UK summers are getting hotter.” They offer so many practical benefits for a wide range of customers, and we love helping customers see how much they can change a home when used on windows and doors.

A meaningful home transformation

For Shaz, this project was about more than just improving her home – it was about creating a space for her family’s future. It was a privilege for the team at The Shutter Studio to be involved in such a meaningful home transformation and to support Shaz and her family as part of this journey featured on George Clarke’s Kitchen v Garden.
